Although most of these comparatively small-scale pieces were issued in supplements to periodicals or in anthologies, they are by no means inferior in quality. Reger was probably concerned initially with using short pieces to spread his name so as to prepare as many organists as possible for his larger works. This collection is divided into two sections, one for free compositions not based on a cantus firmus, and another for cantus firmus compositions. The volume ends with Reger's original version for harmonium of the Romance in a-minor, which may be played to advantage in this form on small organs without pedal.
